The National Council for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD) accused the Burundian army of massacring 250 civilians. Forty people were reported killed in fighting August 28-29 in the Bujumbura region of Burundi. Tanzania is attempting to start a new round of peace talks that would include the Tutsi-led Burundi government, the main Hutu rebel group, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD), and the Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD), led by Jean-Bosco Ndayikengurukiye. The CNDD is the political wing of the FDD.

August 29; 14 people were killed in a Hutu rebel attack near Burundi's capital, Bujumbura. Reports stated 200 rebel soldiers participated in the attack.
