Burundi's President Pierre Buyoya held a meeting with Hutu rebel leader Jean-Bosco Ndayikengurukiye, (Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD)). It was an unexpected meeting, though international negotiators (including Nelson Mandela) had been trying to arrange a face to face talk between the leaders since August 2000. Western wire reports said the two men agreed to meet again to discuss the Arusha peace agreement. The same report credited DRC dictator (now deceased) Laurent Kabila with urging Buyoya to meet with the FDD. (The FDD has bases in the DRC and has fought inside the DRC as an ally of DRC government forces.) The DRC government has claimed that the Tutsi-led Burundian Army has launched attacks into the DRC.
