FNL Hutu rebels issued a statement that contradicted a claim by the Burundian government. The government said on July 29 that it had found a mass grave outside Bujumbura with the bodies of 30 FNL fighters. The FNL said on Wednesday denied that bodies were those of FNL guerrillas. Whose bodies are in the grave? Once again, the rule of thumb in Burundi is that the government claims are highly questionable and so are those of the rebels. It could easily be a grave with 30 civilians killed by government troops or by rebel forces. We could find no independent journalists confirmation of the mass grave discovery.
