Hutu rebels in Burundi launched new attacks, this time in central Burundi. On July 12 the FNL (Forces for National Liberation) attacked a Burundi Army unit in central Muramya province. Two firefights were reported. A total of three Burundian soldiers were killed, plus one policemen, and five FNL rebels. The FNL failed to join the Burundi peace process. The FDD (Forces for Defense of Democracy), the largest Hutu rebel group in Burundi, did quit fighting-- and proceeded to win the majority of seats in Burundi's last parliamentary election. A senior FDD leader will become Burundi's president next month. That means a Hutu-led Burundi government will face a Hutu-led insurgency.
