No one knows how many have died in the Darfur violence so far. The raids on hundreds of villages are thought to have killed over 10,000 outright. But the larger death toll takes place later, as the refugees, lacking shelter,  food, or sometimes even drinkable water, begin to die off. It's estimated that about 2,000 refugees are dying each week, and that this number is increasing.
