Thailand: December 26, 2004

The government believes there are at least 3,000 Islamic radical activists in the Moslem southern provinces. Most of these men are not armed, but they are being trained in the use of firearms, explosives and terror techniques in Malaysian training camps. The government fears that the terrorists will start attacking the tourist resorts in southern Thailand, which will increase unemployment and unrest in the south. These resorts were heavily damaged today by tidal waves (caused by a large earthquake off Indonesia.) Reconstruction will depend on what the resort operators feel about the potential for Islamic terrorism.  The government is sending another 2,000 police to the south. Nearly 600 people died from Islamic terrorism in 2004, and the non-Moslem minority in the south is living in fear from attacks. Many schools are closed, because most of their teachers are non-Moslem and feel threatened.
