Investigators keep finding links between Thai Islamic radicals and Jemaah Islamiyah. The key to these links appears to be the  Gerakan Mujahideen Islam Pattani group, formed in the 1990s by a few Thai Moslems who had gone to Afghanistan to help fight the Russians in 1980s. But like most of those foreign volunteers, they didn't learn many practical skills. This is being taken care of by Malay and Indonesian Islamic radicals who learned bomb making and terrorism techniques in the Afghan al Qaeda camps of the late 1990s, or in the smaller Jemaah Islamiyah training camps set up since 2001 in the Philippines and Indonesia.
