The violence in the south is increasing, with Islamic terrorists
ambushing police patrols, and increasing their attacks on Buddhist clergy. The
Islamic radical groups have shown no interest in negotiating with the
government.

9, 2006: The ban on public meetings was lifted. Martial law is still in effect,
and is apparently going to be lifted in stages.

8, 2006: The government has offered the three southern Moslem provinces
self-rule. But the moderate groups that would run that government would be
responsible to dealing with the violence. That appears to be a deal breaker, as
it would turn into a form of civil war down there.
