January 17, 2000; US Federal District Court Judge Leonard Sand has again denied bail to Wadih el Hage, a Saudi accused of conspiring with Osama bin Laden to kill US citizens abroad. El Hage has been held since his arrest in Sept 98, mostly in solitary confinement. Judge Sand agreed to allow el Hage more time to talk to his family on the telephone and has asked police to only strip search him if absolutely necessary. Last June, el Hage (angered at being held in solitary confinement) leapt from his chair and charged at Judge Sand, but was restrained by US marshals. In the Osama bin Laden case, 17 people (including bin Laden) have been charged with US crimes. Five are in jail in New York, and three more are being held in Britain pending extradition.
