Terrorism: May 1, 2003

The defeat of Iraq did not go down well among the people of Saudi Arabia. In general, the population is sullen and unhappy at the sight of another Arab army being quickly crushed by "crusaders." This has led to increased danger of terrorist attacks on Westerners. The U.S. State Department issued a warning to Americans in Saudi Arabia this week, warning of the strong possibility of a terrorist attack. As the State Department put it; " Potential targets may include facilities where American citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, such as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, outdoor recreation events or resorts and beaches. U.S. citizens should increase their security awareness when at such locations." Americans were warned to stay at home as much as possible until the danger is over. There was no announcement as to when that might be.
