: The German navy took over anti-terrorism surveillance operations from Norway and Denmark on the night of September 30, as part of NATO's 'Active Endeavour' operation to monitor activities in the Mediterranean. The German navy fast patrol boats started patrolling Spain's Bay of Cadiz on October 1, 2003. The German flotilla will search for possible terrorist supply routes, carry out coast watch duties and ensure the safety of transport vessels in the Straits of Gibraltar region for the next six months.

The three patrol vessels, a tender and 120 crewmen left the Baltic Sea port of Rostock-Warnemuende on September 19 and took a week to reach their duty station. - Adam Geibel
