The US Army has begun reorganizing the two brigades (one each from the 1st Infantry Division and 1st Armored Division) based at Fort Riley, Kansas, to the Army XXI standard. This includes reducing each battalion from four companies to three, reducing each battalion's mortar platoon from six tubes to four, increasing the number of infantry in each Bradley platoon, and adding a brigade scout troop. These changes will be needed to match the new "digital" organization to be adopted in the future. They also reflect the inability of the Army to keep combat units fully manned.--Stephen V Cole
