The Taliban captured the provincial capital of Charikar, although a Northern Alliance counter attack recaptured Bagram airbase. Other Taliban forces advanced 80 kilometers north of Kabul, close to the Panjsher valley. In response, the Northern Alliance dynamited the entrance to the valley, causing the Taliban to halt and clear the rubble before proceeding. Casualties for both sides, so far, appear to be over a thousand. Much of the fighting is fought to get through the few roads in the mountainous area, and onto the plains and plateaus containing the towns. Over 200,000 refugees have fled the combat zones. The Northern Alliance appears to have retreated from the two provinces south of the Panjsher valley.
