August 7, 2007: Despite
Sudan's insistence that it no longer supports Chadian rebels, the Chad
government believes that negotiations with the rebels are deadlocked because of
continued support from Sudan. Perhaps in reaction to that, Chad will now allow
several thousand UN and AU (African Union) peacekeepers in eastern Chad, to
help patrol the Sudanese border. In this area, raiders from both sides of the
border continue to attack villages and refugee camps. The Chadian army is too
thin on the ground to stop this, and is more concerned with keeping the rebels
out of the main towns, and off the main roads, especially the one that takes
you to the capital.
