Ariel Sharon was elected prime minister by a landside (62.5 to 37.4 percent.) Voter turnout was only 59 percent. The last two elections had a 79 percent turnout. Many voters were dismayed by the choice of either the ineffectual Barak or his fire breathing opponent. Sharon promised to make fewer concessions to the Palestinians and take strong measures to reduce violence.  The last time Sharon was in the government, he was largely responsible for the building if Jewish settlements in Palestinian territory.
