- On July 7, 1956, seven army trucks loaded with dynamite explode in middle of Cali, Columbia, killing over 1,100 people and destroyimg some 2,000 buildings.
- Although the nearly three million American military personnel took ship across the Atlantic during World War I, only 500 died in u-boat attacks on warships and merchantmen, and another 71 died of disease or accidents en route.
- Perhaps the most unusual military career of any American president was that of Millard Fillmore, who, never having seen service before, and retired in the bargain, at the age of 62 joined a home guard militia regiment in New York.
- As a morale boosting measure, during World War II wedding gowns were excempt from standard clothing restrictions, albeit that neither silk nor nylon were easy to come by.
- The execution of George Hart in New York City on January 3, 1812, proved so tumultuous an affair that the milita had to be summoned.
- As the Second World War went increasing against them, German soldiers developed a simple way to differentiate among the types of aircraft flying overhead, "If the aircraft above were camouflaged, we knew they were British. If they were silver, we knew they were American. And if they weren't there at all, we knew they were German."
- Between 1919 and 1932, the Naval Academy Class of 1888 supplied the service with three successive Chiefs of Naval Operations, possibly because the Secretary of the Navy for much of the period was a classmate.
- In 1815 fully one-third of all the titled officers in the British Army were in the Foot Guards.
