Infinite Wisdom
"Before war is declared it is but natural that every peaceful overture be made."
La Triviata
- Among the numerous titles which he enjoyed by the favor of his brother-in-law Napoleon I of France, Joachim Murat, cavalryman par excellence, numbered "Grand amiral de l'Empire," despite the fact that he was utterly unfamiliar with matters maritime.
- The B-29 fire raid on Tokyo on the night of March 9-10, 1945, was the most destructive air attack in history, resulting in nearly 84,000 deaths and the destruction of 16 square miles of the city, with nearly a million people left homeless.
- In 1874 a pusillanimous employee of the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich stole a complete set of plans for the Whitehead torpedo, the ultimate "secret weapon" of the age, and attempted to sell them to the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Ordnance, which refused to take part in so dishonorable a transaction.
- In 1924 the Schneider Cup Races which proved critical in the development of the propeller-driven fighter airplane were scheduled to be held at Baltimore, but had to be cancelled when so many of the aircraft entered crashed during practice flights that only one was left to compete.
- Between 1866 and 1892 there were almost 940 fights between the Regular Army and the Western Indians, in which about 850 enlisted men and 69 officers died.
- During the 1840s the New York State militia possessed 550 cannon (about half brass, the rest iron), plus 50,000 smoothbore and 3,000 rifled muskets, a thousand carbines, and 1,300 pistols enough arms to have equipped the Regular Army of the day about eight times over.
- Despite the fact that most of the time they operated on horseback, while on campaign during the eighteenth century, the dragoons of the French Army received their orders directly from the army commander or the chief-of-staff, as it was contrary to custom that they be subject to the chief of cavalry.
- In September 1918, the German Navy decided to increase u-boat production from 16 a month to 36 little more than a month before the Army decided to call for an armistice.
