"War is an art, a free and creative activity founded on scientific principles."
La Triviata
- In 1914 the Russian Army had the highest ratio of machine guns to troops of any major power, 2.2 pieces per thousand men, at a time when the next best ratio was the Germany Army's 1.3.
- During the mid-seventeenth century it was common for Spanish troops to have a daily wine ration of 2-4 pints, which was actually less than that for day laborers back home, who usually got 6!
- The room in which Abraham Lincoln died was actually being rented by one William Clark, a Union private.
- In the mid-seventeenth century a Spanish musketeer's normal ammunition supply was only 20 rounds, sufficient for perhaps 20-30 minutes firing, though at that he was better off than his French counterpart, who was normally issued on 15 rounds.
- On October 2, 1990, the last day of its existence, the "National People's Army" of the "German Democratic Republic" (i.e., East Germany), numbered 103,000 men, of whom 32,000 were officers and 20,000 NCOs.
- By order of her captain, the last rounds fired by the English privateer Mars against the greatly superior French frigate Florissant in early 1743, were loaded with gold and silver coins, so that the enemy would not capture his money when they finally seized the ship.
- During the mid-1930s the Soviet Union bought several warships from Italy, paying in the form of aviation fuel, which the Italians then used to help the Spanish Nationalists fight the Spanish Republicans, who were being supported by the Soviet Union.
- In the course of 1918 the French Army expended 81 million rounds of artillery ammunition.
