- During a campaign against the Turks in southern Greece in 1694, the death rate from disease among the Venetian forces ran about 20-percent per year.
- Herbert Aptheker, the influential marxist historian and long-time CPUSA member, served as a field artilleryman in the ETO during World War II, rising to major and earning a silver star.
- In the summer of 1914, the first country to mobilize for World War I was actually the Netherlands, the wily Dutch having gotten wind of some of the details of the Schlieffen Plan, which in its original form included a invasion of their country.
- During the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps employed about 10,000 officers, mostly from the army, but also from the navy and marine corps, about two-thirds of them reservists, who supervised the administration, discipline, and employment of several million young men, thereby gaining immense experience in leadership that came in handy soon afterwards.
- In the Royal Navy during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, an officer who retired was said to have "Swallowed the anchor."
- Gen. Wallace Greene, Jr., the 23rd Commandant of the Marine Corps (1964-1967), was a direct descendant of Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene, arguably the most successful American commander of the Revolutionary War.
- On March 4, 1945, eight Army Air Force B-24s bound for Stuttgart accidentally bombed Zurich, Switzerland.
- Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Hugo Black served as a captain in the 81st Field Artillery in France during World War I.
