- The average combat patrol of a German submarine during World War I was just 17 days, and the longest was only 25 days, by U-38 in 1915.
- At the Battle of Fontenoy (May 11, 1745) the Anglo-Dutch-Austrian Allies lost 40 of their 80 cannon because many of the guns were being served by civilian contractors, most of whom decided to leave field in haste when they realized that the battle was lost.
- By mid-1943 American troops overseas were each receiving an average of 14 pieces of mail a week
- Tsar Peter the Great of Russia, a giant of a man and a lion in battle, reportedly was terrified of cockroaches.
