"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public"
-- | Theodore Roosevelt, Jr,
1918

- The earliest depiction of a battle appears to be a Paleolithic rock carving near Valtorta, in the Province of Castellon, in eastern Spain, which may date to as early as 8,000 B.C and shows about 25 archers arranged in two or three waves attacking abut ten opponents organized in two lines, suggesting that even at that early date tactics had already begun to develop.

- Of all the generals on active duty with the U.S. Army when George C. Marshall became Chief of Staff on September 1, 1939, only one, Walter Kreuger, actually commanded American troops in battle during World War II.
- On January 4, 1825, Alexandr Dumas pre fought his first duel, during which his pants accidentally fell down, a development of which his opponent did not take advantage.
- In 554 B.C. an invasion of the Chinese state of Qi was called off after the attackers learned that the ruler of Qi had just died, and deemed it inappropriate to continue.
- The first woman to a fly combat air mission was probably Hlne Dutrieu of France, who volunteered for service in August of 1914 and was soon flying reconnaissance patrols near Paris.
- On May 8, 1846, shortly before the Battle of Palo Alto began, Lt. Jacob E. Blake, a topographical engineer on Maj. Gen. Zachary Taylor's staff, rode within musket range across the front of the Mexican lines, stopping periodically so that he could count the enemy troops.
