- During the Second World War the Germans lost an average of 1000 horses a day on the Russian Front: 75% in combat, 17% by heart failure, and 8% to disease, exposure, and starvation.
- The most common nickname for the approximately 25,000 Native Americans who served in World War II, largely integrated with white Americans, was "Chief"
- Friedrich von Martini, designer of the famed Martini rifles widely used in the late nineteenth century was by profession originally a lace manufacturer.
