- In the 525 days between April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918, the U.S. Army grew 1,700-percent, from 213.557 to 3,685,458 troops.
- Between 1954 and 1999 the number of aircraft in the U.S. Navy destroyed in accidents fell by nearly 98-pecent, from 776 to 22.
- The French Line, which operated luxury liners � Normandie, France � on the Atlantic for over a century, was founded in 1862 for the purpose of transporting troops to take part in the French conquest of Mexico
- The first woman to attain the rank of lieutenant colonel in any army was Marto Maurogenos, a partisan leader who fought in the Greek War for Independence (1821-1826)
