- During the 1930s Hermann G�ring � who was Chief of the Reich Forestry Service, as well as much else besides � imported two breeding pairs of racoons to Germany in an attempt to enter the fur business, a venture that failed, leading to the release of many the animals into the wild, resulting in widespread infestations in some areas.

- During World War I the U.S. Army bought four million pairs of rubber boots for which it had no requirement.
