- In 1918 the 24,000-man strong "square" divisions favored by the U.S. Army, required 19 miles of road space when on the march.
- During the Seven Years' War, a rumor circulated among French troops in Germany that some of their generals had arranged to have special deliveries of water from the Seine, so that their coffee would taste just as it did in Paris.
- For centuries the Royal Navy has had ships bearing the name La Hogue, to commemorate a victory over the French in 1692, and for just as long they've been spelling it wrong, as the place is named La Hougue.
- Perhaps the most valuable contribution of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps to national security was the result of the application of its expertise in chemical dispersal to the development of de-icing technology for airplanes.
- During the eighteenth century France was at war 18 times, for a total of 52 years, with the average war lasting 2.9 years, and the average interval between wars being 2.6 years, though, of course, some wars overlapped.
- King Henry VIII once paid �1,500 for a tapestry of "David and Goliath," which compares favorably with the �8,708.5s.3d. he paid for the 1,500 ton warship Great Harry and three small galleys at about the same time.
- The gold bar that signifies the exalted rank of second lieutenant in the U.S. Army was only instituted in 1917, when distinctive shoulder straps for officers' uniforms were abolished.
