La Triviata
- More than 60 years after the
1942-1943 campaign in their country, Tunisians still dig up about about 50
unexploded shells, bombs, and mines each month.
- In 1813 the American privateer Thomas,
an armed schooner, took two British ships that together yielded $92,246.36
in prize, so that even the lowest ranking member of the crew was awarded nearly
$800, over four years’ pay for a common unskilled worker.
- During the nineteenth century
Austria engaged in 21 wars that lasted a total of 25 years, for an average
duration of just 0.8 years per war.
- Although during the Revolutionary
War the Continental Army was more open to talent that any of its day, it
appears that fewer than 2-percent of American officers were former enlisted men.
- A U.S. Army private serving in
Mexico in 1846-1848 earned $7 a month and one ration a day, while a teamster
with the army received $25 a month and 1½ rations a day.
- While commanding the Alcazar of
Toledo in the summer of 1936, closely besieged siege by Spanish Republican
troops and militiamen, Col. Jose Moscardo was approached by an officer who demanded
better rations, whereupon he handed the man a 50-peseta note and said
"Take this, go outside and buy something if you like!"
- In the eighteenth century Prussian
males were required to register for military service at the age of 10.
- On a average, between 1765 and
1793, 21½-percent of the crewmen in the Royal Navy were flogged each year, with
the mean number of lashes being 5, though only 19-percent of the men serving
under the ill-famed Capt. William Bligh were flogged, for a mean of only 1½
lashes.
