- In the three years following the outbreak of the French Revolution on July 14, 1789, c. 4,100 of the c. 9,600 officers in the French Army deserted.
- The Interstate Highway System was inspired by a 62-day "motor march" that took place between July 7 and September 6, 1919 between Washington and San Francisco, in which a certain Capt. Dwight D. Eisenhower took part, who, in 1956, signed the legislation that initiated the road network that was later named after him.
- The most obscure war in the history of the Western Hemisphere is probably the "War of the Thousand Days," a civil war in Columbia 1899-1901, that claimed over the lives of about 100,000 troops and an equal number of civilians.
- On average during World War I, the British Army on the Western Front suffered 1,139.46 casualties for each 1,000 troops on duty per year, of whom 9.08-percent (c. 125) were killed in action or died of wounds.
- On the eve of World War I there was only one company of black men in the National Guard of any of the erstwhile Confederate States.
- In anticipation of the Spanish-American War, the U.S. bought a cruiser building in Britain for Brazil, with the result that the U.S.S. New Orleans ever afterwards had Portuguese name plates on all equipment, not to mention the Brazilian coat-of-arms emblazoned everywhere.
- In 1689, during the Nine Years' War, French privateers seized some 4,200 English and Dutch vessels.
